First Twenty20 world Championship was successfully held in South Africa from September 11 to September 24, 2007. Twelve teams took part in the thirteen-day tournament. The tournament was a huge hit due to its interesting rules and pace of the game.
Arch Rivals India and Pakistan reached final by beating Australia and New Zealand in their respective semi-finals. In a thrilling final India beat pakistan by just 5 runs to lift the inaugral Twenty20 World Championship.
India's Irfan Pathan declared Man of the Match for the final, for his fantastic effort of 3 wickets for just 16 runs in 4 overs.
Pakistan's Shahid Afridi declared Man of the Tournament, as he took 12 wickets in seven matches. Afridi averaged just 15.66 with the ball and boasted a more-than-competitive economy rate of 6.71.
India's Yuraj Singh hit the biggest six of the tournament, i.e. 119 meters, during a heroic 30-ball innings of 70 against Australia in the semi-final at Kingsmead, Durban was the longest hit in the 27-match event.
During the tournament total 264 sixes and 659 fours were hit.
Yuraj Singh made a record by hitting the six successive sixes in an over off off England's Stuart Broad.
Most Sixes i.e. 13 was hit by New Zealand's Craig McMillan followed by India's Yuraj Singh who hit 12 sixes.
Chris Gayle of West Indies hit the first and only century of Twenty20 Cricket against South Africa.
Above all first Twenty20 World Cup was a huge hit and the second event scheduled for England and Wales during the ICC’s Centenary Year in 2009.
